It is another nail in the coffin for rural areas.
Heather Colley and her two children moved four times over five years as they fled high rents in eastern Tennessee, which, like much of rural America, hasn't been spared from soaring housing costs. A family gift in 2021 of a small plot of land offered a shot at homeownership, but building a house was beyond the reach of a single mother and manicurist. A grant program that has helped make affordable housing possible in rural areas for decades changed that when she qualified for $272,000 to build a three-bedroom home. She moved in June of last year. Colley said, "I pinch myself every time I pull into my garage." House Republicans overseeing federal budget negotiations did not include funding for the HOME Investment Partnerships Program in their budget proposal. It would set back tens of thousands of future affordable housing developments nationwide, particularly hurting Appalachian towns and rural counties where government aid is sparse and investors are few, according to experts and state housing agencies. The program has helped build or repair more than 1.3 million affordable homes in the last three decades, of which at least 540,000 were in congressional districts that are rural or significantly rural, according to an Associated Press analysis of federal data....

The government shutdown, CDC fight, and stock trading ban dominated the agenda as Congress returned from recess.
Congressional Republicans passed President Donald Trump's "big beautiful bill" of tax and spending cuts without a single Democratic vote. As a government shutdown looms, they will have to find a way to work with Democrats. The September agenda will include the annual spending battle, as well as a possible effort by Senate Republicans to change their chamber's rules. Legislation that would impose steep tariffs on some of Russia's trading partners is being debated by the Senate. In the House, Republicans will continue their investigations of former President Joe Biden while Speaker Mike Johnson navigates a split in his conference over whether the Trump administration should release more files in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. The most urgent task for Congress is to keep the government open when federal funding runs out in September. It is not clear if Republicans and Democrats will be able to agree on how to do that. Congress will have to pass a short-term spending measure to keep the government funded for a few weeks or months while they try to finish the full-year package....

"Bait" was a microbudget portrait of a Cornish coastal community that reveled in its old-school, hand-processed aesthetic and proved a surprise hit in U.K. theaters. The firm stand against gentrification taken in its onscreen narrative, about middle-class townies crowding out longstanding local businesses, also felt indicative of the place.

The cost of being soft on white-collar crime is hidden.
There have been two instances of white-collar crime in the last few weeks. The first case involves a summer camp owner who may have cheated parents, vendors and counselors by declaring bankruptcy multiple times. The second involves a lawyer who may have used his position to trick a young client into signing over his tech company to him. Both cases should be investigated by the U.S. Attorney's Offices. They are unlikely to face real consequences due to limited resources. It is easy to assume that the financial penalties collected by the Department of Justice are used to pad the budgets of the agencies that impose them. The fines go to the Crime Victims Fund. White-collar enforcement results in more than fines....

In the United States, 32 million family-owned businesses form a vital pillar of the economy, injecting $ 7.7 trillion annually into the GDP and creating 83.3 million jobs. The spirit of entrepreneurship, a commitment to a long-term vision and a dedication to their communities are intangible qualities. Challenges can be presented by this blend of personal and professional relationships. Preserving a multigenerational legacy requires a tailored approach to managing family dynamics, succession planning and effective capital structuring and management. There are four considerations for navigating a multigenerational family enterprise. Some family members won't work in the business. 42% of the upcoming generation expects to hold leadership, C-suite or executive-level roles within five years, and 28% of current leaders plan to transfer power within that time frame. It is a good idea to simplify existing ownership structures in order to avoid later generations of fragmented ownership....

Business loses $2 billion a day from rude employees.
According to the Society for Human Resource Management, civility in the U.S. workplace is costing businesses an estimated $2 billion a day. The organization sifts through reports of rudeness, terse emails, and snippy interactions and finds that reduced productivity is costing companies. The Civility Index research found that Americans experience over 200 million acts of incivility each day, which is near a record high. It was also up from the last quarter. The constant stream of disrespecttranslates into costly absences, sagging morale, and lost output. Jim Link, the chief human resources officer of the Society for Human Resource Management, said in a recent interview that they know the number. The surge in office incivility is due to a number of factors, including broader socio-political tensions, pandemic-caused stress, and what Link calls "digital bravery," a phrase that conjures up the "keyboard warrior." People feel free to say things online that would never be said face-to-face....

I turned down Yale for a small Bible college.
I threw away a glossy Yale admissions booklet that had been on my bookshelf for four years. I didn't know why I placed it there in the first place, but I thought I was destined for it. Yale was a high school student's dream school, with world-class professors, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and gothic architecture that seemed to promise wisdom within its very stones. It felt weird when the letters started arriving. Many of my friends were shocked when I turned Yale down. I went to a small Bible college. I wrestled with the decision for a while.
