Legislators in 3 states want to roll back paid sick leave benefits.
By DAVID A. LIEB and MARGERY A. BECK. Voters in Alaska, Missouri and Nebraska were asked if they wanted to require employers to give paid sick leave to their workers. They said yes. Lawmakers in each of the states are trying to roll back the benefits because of concerns from businesses. Legislators try to alter laws that are supported by the voters they represent. The paid sick leave law in Michigan was revised in February to allow a longer period before new employees are eligible and to delay the date when small businesses must comply. Some voters are angry, but some lawmakers think citizen activists overlooked the realities of running a business. Tim Hart, the owner of a restaurant in Missouri, said the paid sick leave requirement causes him to pay two people to work at the same time....

The new CEO of the California High-Speed Rail Authority is tasked with revitalizing the nation's largest infrastructure project amid skyrocketing costs and new fears that the Trump administration could pull $4 billion in federal funding. "We started this one, and we are not succeeding," he said, describing what drew him to the job after work on high-speed systems in Europe. It was the main reason for me to say, let's go in, completely turn it around, and put it back to where it should have been. Fix all the issues, get the funding stable, and show the world that we will do it when we decide that we want to do it. It may take nearly two more decades to complete most of the San Francisco-to-Los Angeles segment, even if funding is secured, because no tracks have been laid five years past that deadline. The project's price tag is more than triple the initial estimate. The voter-approved bond and money from the state's cap-and-trade program have mostly funded it....
